Maxime Old

Maxime Old (1910-1991) est l’un des designers, décorateurs et architectes d’intérieur les plus importants du XXe siècle. Son travail fut très apprécié et remarqué du début de sa carrière dans les années 1930, jusqu’à la fin dans les années 1980.

Après avoir terminé ses études à l’Ecole Boulle, d’où il est sorti major de sa promotion, Maxime Old entre en 1928 dans les ateliers d’Emile-Jacques Ruhlman en tant que dessinateur, période pendant laquelle il apprendra tous les différents corps de métier.

Dès 1930, il se consacrera uniquement à reprendre la fabrique familiale, puis il participe pour la première fois au Salon des artistes décorateurs en 1935. Il affirme son style, sa maîtrise des couleurs, ses recherches d’horizontales et de formes fortement modernes pour l’époque.

Durant la période d’après-guerre, Maxime Old jouera un rôle important dans la reconstruction du pays en étant membre de la Commission du meuble de France. Ainsi, il travaille pour de grandes Institutions nationales telles que le mobilier national ou encore de grandes compagnies maritimes ou hôtelières.

Durant ces années, il donne également des cours dans des écoles prestigieuses telle que l’Ecole nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs. À partir des années 1960 il s’intéresse davantage à un mobilier plus global en pensant également à son environnement.

Il devient alors architecte d’intérieur et réalise l’intégralité de certains espaces tel que le Paquebot France ou encore l’Hôtel de ville de Rouen.


Maxime Old (1910-1991) is one of the most important designer, architect and decorator of the twentieth century. His work was highly regarded and noticed from the beginnig of his carreer in the 1930’s until the end of the 1980’s.

After completing his studies at the Boulle School, from which he graduated major in his promotion, Maxime Old entered into the workshops of Emile-Jacques Ruhlman in 1928 as a draftsman, where he learned all the different trades.

From 1930 he devoted himself solely to taking over the family factory, then he participated for the first time to the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs in 1935. He affirmed his style, his mastery of colors, his research into horizontals and strongly modern shapes for the time.

During the post-war period, Maxime Old played an important role in the Reconstruction of the country by being a member of the Furniture Commission of France. Thus, he works for important national institutions such as the National Furniture or big companies or hotels.

During these years, he also gave courses in prestigious schools such as the National School of Decorative Arts.
From the 1960s he became more interested in global furniture, he started to think about the environment of these furnitures.

He then became an interior designer and produced all of certain spaces, such as the Paquebot France or the Rouen Town Hall.
